Morning – Departure from Marrakech
Your excursion begins early in the morning from Marrakech. We will pick you up from your accommodation or an agreed meeting point. From there, we drive northeast toward the Ouzoud Waterfalls.
The drive takes approximately two and a half to three hours each way. As we leave Marrakech behind, the landscape changes from flat agricultural plains to rolling hills covered in olive trees. The route passes through small towns and Berber villages where daily life moves at a slower pace.
Arrival at Ouzoud Waterfalls
Upon arrival at the Ouzoud Waterfalls, you will begin to explore this stunning natural environment. The name Ouzoud comes from the Berber word for olive, and the area is indeed surrounded by ancient olive groves.
You will discover the waterfalls that plunge from impressive heights and enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding area. The main waterfall drops 110 meters in a dramatic free fall. Two smaller cascades join it nearby. The sound of falling water echoes through the valley, and mist rises from the base, often creating rainbow displays when the sun hits the spray.
Exploring the Waterfalls
You will have time to walk along the well-maintained paths that wind around both sides of the falls. Multiple viewpoints offer different perspectives:
- From the top, you look down over the edge into the gorge
- From the middle paths, you walk behind the water curtain on one section
- From the bottom, you feel the cool spray on your face
A highlight of the visit is the opportunity to observe local wildlife. Barbary macaques, the only wild monkey species found in Africa north of the Sahara, live in the area. These tailless monkeys are often seen along the paths and near the water. They are accustomed to visitors but should be observed respectfully without feeding.
For those who wish, a small boat can take you across the pool at the base of the main waterfall. This traditional wooden vessel brings you close enough to feel the full power of the falling water. The boat ride is a short, optional experience available for a small local fee.
Midday – Local Lunch
During your visit to the Ouzoud Waterfalls, you will have the opportunity to enjoy a local lunch in one of the restaurants near the falls. These family-run establishments are built into the cliffs overlooking the water.
You can try traditional Moroccan dishes while enjoying views of the cascades. Popular options include:
- Tagine with chicken, olives, and preserved lemon
- Grilled trout or other fresh fish
- Berber omelette
- Fresh salads and bread
- Mint tea to finish
Many restaurants have terraces where you can eat while watching the water fall just meters away.
Afternoon – More Exploration or Relaxation
After lunch, you will have free time to explore further, take more photos, or simply relax by the water. You may choose to:
- Walk down to the river below the falls
- Visit the small shops selling local crafts and argan oil
- Climb to a higher viewpoint for a different perspective
- Sit at a cafe and watch the monkeys play
Late Afternoon – Return to Marrakech
After a full day of exploration and delicious local food, we begin our return journey to Marrakech. You will arrive back in the city in the late afternoon or early evening. Your driver will drop you off at your accommodation or the agreed meeting point.
