Departure from Merzouga
Your 4x4 adventure begins in Merzouga village. You will meet your driver and guide at your accommodation or a designated meeting point. After a warm welcome, you will board a comfortable, air conditioned 4x4 vehicle designed for desert terrain.
Your guide will discuss the itinerary with you. The route can be adjusted based on your interests and the time of day.
Crossing the Desert Terrain
The excursion takes you through the immense Sahara Desert. You will experience the excitement of crossing sand dunes, deep canyons, and amazing desert landscapes. The 4x4 vehicle handles the soft sand with ease, allowing you to reach areas that are inaccessible to regular cars.
As you drive, you will feel the thrill of climbing steep dunes and descending the other side. Your experienced driver knows exactly how to navigate the shifting sands safely.
Stunning Landscapes and Panoramic Views
During the excursion, you will enjoy panoramic views of the desert and have the opportunity to take spectacular photographs. You will see the desert in its fullest expression, from the high dunes to the rocky landscapes of the hamada.
Your guide will stop at the best viewpoints, giving you time to step out of the vehicle, breathe in the desert air, and capture the beauty with your camera.
Fascinating Stops
We will make stops at fascinating places, including:
- Hidden Oases: Small pockets of palm trees, water, and green vegetation that appear suddenly in the middle of the sand. These oases have sustained desert travelers for centuries.
- Ancient Nomadic Settlements: Remains of old Berber camps where families once lived. Your guide will share stories about traditional desert life and how nomadic people survive in this harsh environment.
Depending on the season and location, you may have the opportunity to meet local Berber families who still live a nomadic or semi-nomadic lifestyle. You will learn about their traditions, food, and relationship with the desert.
Additional Destinations (Depending on Tour Length)
Depending on whether you choose a half day or full day excursion, you may also visit:
- Khamlia Village: Also known as the village of the Gnawa people. You will hear traditional Gnawa music and learn about the history of these descendants of slaves from West Africa.
- Dayet Srji Lake: A seasonal salt lake that fills with water after rains. When water is present, it attracts flamingos and other birds.
- Mifis Mines: Abandoned lead mines with a fascinating industrial history in the middle of the desert.
- The Border with Algeria: A viewpoint near the closed border, offering dramatic desert views stretching into another country.
Sunset in the Desert (Afternoon Excursion Only)
If you choose an afternoon departure, one of the most impressive moments of the excursion is the sunset over the desert. Enjoy the beauty of the sun setting over the dunes while you relax in the middle of nature.
Your guide will choose a high dune with the best view. You will have time to sit, sip mint tea, and watch as the sky transforms into shades of orange, purple, and gold.
Return to Merzouga
After exploring the dunes, oases, and other sites, you will return to Merzouga village. Your driver will drop you off at your accommodation.
Your 4x4 desert excursion concludes here.
