3 Days from Marrakech to Merzouga & Fes

Morning – Departure & High Atlas Mountains

Your adventure begins with an early morning pickup from your accommodation in Marrakech. We drive south toward the High Atlas Mountains, ascending the legendary Tizi n'Tichka pass (2,260 meters). Prepare for dramatic landscapes, winding roads, and spectacular photo opportunities.

Midday – Aït Ben Haddou (UNESCO World Heritage)

Our first major stop is the iconic Aït Ben Haddou – a stunning fortified village made of red adobe clay. This ancient ksar has served as a backdrop for Hollywood blockbusters including:

• Gladiator
• Game of Thrones (Yunkai)
• Lawrence of Arabia
• The Mummy

You'll have time to explore the narrow alleyways, climb to the granary at the top for panoramic views, and learn about centuries of Berber history.

Afternoon – Ouarzazate (Hollywood of Africa)

We continue to Ouarzazate, often called the "Hollywood of Africa." This desert city is home to world-famous film studios (Atlas Studios). You can optionally visit Taourirt Kasbah, a stunning example of traditional Moroccan architecture.

Evening – Overnight in Ouarzazate

You'll spend the night in a comfortable hotel or riad in Ouarzazate. Enjoy a delicious Moroccan dinner and rest up for tomorrow's desert adventure.

Morning – Journey toward the Sahara

After breakfast, we depart Ouarzazate and drive east along the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs. You'll pass through the Dades Valley and Todra Gorges – dramatic red canyons carved by rivers over millennia. We'll make several stops for photos and to stretch your legs.

Late Afternoon – Arrival in Merzouga & Camel Trek

We arrive in the village of Merzouga, gateway to the majestic Erg Chebbi dunes – some of the highest sand dunes in Morocco (up to 150 meters).

Here's where the magic begins:

• You'll meet your camel guide
• Mount your camel (one per person)
• Trek into the desert for approximately 1.5 hours
• Watch the sunset paint the dunes in shades of orange, gold, and purple

Evening – Luxury Berber Camp

You'll spend the night in a luxury Berber camp nestled between the dunes. Your camp includes:

• 🏕️ Comfortable private tents with real beds and blankets
• 🍲 Traditional Moroccan dinner (vegetarian available)
• 🎵 Live Berber music around the campfire
• ✨ Stargazing – the clearest skies you've ever seen
• 🍵 Mint tea – served all evening

Pro tip: Wake up early for the sunrise – it's absolutely worth it.

Morning – Sunrise in the Sahara

Wake up early to witness one of nature's greatest shows: sunrise over the Erg Chebbi dunes. The shifting light transforms the desert into a sea of gold and amber.

After sunrise, enjoy a Berber breakfast at the camp. Then, ride your camel back to the village of Merzouga (or take a 4x4 transfer if you prefer).

Midday – Ziz Valley & Midelt

We leave the desert behind and head north toward Fes. Along the way:

• We'll stop at Ziz Valley – a dramatic oasis of thousands of palm trees
• Enjoy panoramic views from the Ziz Gorges
• Pass through Midelt – a town nestled between the Middle and High Atlas mountains

Afternoon – Cedar Forests & Barbary Macaques

As we climb into the Middle Atlas mountains, the landscape changes dramatically from desert to lush cedar forests. Keep an eye out for:

• 🐒 Barbary macaques (wild monkeys) – you can feed them (carefully!)
• 🌲 Ancient cedar trees – some over 800 years old
• 🏔️ Ifrane – "Morocco's Switzerland" (a charming alpine-style town)

Evening – Arrival in Fes

We arrive in Fes in the late afternoon or early evening. Your driver will drop you off at your accommodation (riad or hotel) in Fes.
