Morning – Departure from Marrakech
Your journey begins in Marrakech, a city full of charm and culture. We will pick you up from your accommodation in the morning. From there, you will head east, crossing the High Atlas mountains via the iconic Tizi n'Tichka pass at 2,260 meters.
This scenic drive will take you through stunning mountain landscapes and picturesque Berber villages clinging to the hillsides. We make several stops for panoramic views and photographs.
Midday – Visit to Aït Ben Haddou
On your way, you will stop at Aït Ben Haddou, a fortified village declared a UNESCO World Heritage site. This ancient ksar of red adobe clay is one of Morocco's most photographed sites and has served as a backdrop for films including Gladiator, Game of Thrones, and Lawrence of Arabia.
You will have time to explore its narrow streets and ancient kasbahs. Climb to the top for spectacular views of the surrounding river valley.
Afternoon – Valley of the Roses
Continue your journey to the Valley of the Roses, famous for its production of roses and rose products. The valley is particularly beautiful in April and May when the roses are in bloom and the annual Rose Festival takes place.
You can visit local cooperatives and learn about the distillation of rose oil. You will have the opportunity to purchase rose water, soaps, and other products directly from the producers.
Afternoon – Arrival at Todra Gorges
Your first night will be at the Todra Gorges, where you will stay in a charming riad or hotel. The Todra Gorges are a stunning canyon of red rock, carved by the Todra River over thousands of years. The canyon walls rise up to 300 meters high.
Enjoy dinner and relax while preparing for the exciting day ahead.
Morning – Exploration of Todra Gorges
After a delicious breakfast, you will explore the Todra Gorges. Walk along the riverbed and admire the impressive rock formations that rise on both sides. The canyon is famous among rock climbers, and you may see climbers scaling the vertical walls.
The light in the morning is perfect for photography. The sun illuminates the red rock, creating dramatic shadows and colors.
Midday – Journey to the Merzouga Desert
After exploring the gorges, you will head toward the Merzouga desert, the gateway to the Sahara. The landscape transforms as you approach the desert, from rocky plains to the first hints of golden sand.
Late Afternoon – Camel Ride into the Dunes
Upon arrival in Merzouga, you will change from your vehicle to a camel for a trek into the dunes of the Sahara. Each person receives their own camel. Your experienced guide will lead you across the golden sands.
The camel trek is timed to arrive at a high dune just as the sun begins to set. Enjoy a magical sunset over the dunes as the sky transforms into shades of orange, purple, and gold.
Evening – Desert Camp
In the late afternoon, you will arrive at the desert camp. Enjoy a magical sunset over the dunes and a traditional dinner under the stars. Listen to Berber music around a campfire and experience true Saharan hospitality.
The camp consists of comfortable tents with mattresses, blankets, and pillows. Shared bathroom facilities are available.
Early Morning – Sunrise in the Desert
Wake up early to witness the spectacular sunrise over the golden dunes. This is one of the most beautiful moments of the entire journey. The first light touches the highest dunes, then slowly spreads across the sand.
After sunrise, you will return to the camp for breakfast.
This day is dedicated to exploring the desert and all the experiences it offers.
Morning Activities – Oasis and Camel Rides
Explore hidden oases tucked between the dunes. These small pockets of palm trees and water are a surprise in the middle of the sand. Take beautiful photographs and enjoy the tranquility.
You can also enjoy additional camel rides through the dunes, exploring areas you may not have seen the previous day.
Visit to Nomadic Families
You will have the opportunity to visit local nomads and learn about their traditional way of life. Share mint tea with them and listen to their fascinating stories. You will learn how they survive in this harsh environment with their herds of goats and camels.
This is a genuine cultural experience, not a tourist performance. Your guide will translate and help you understand the nomadic lifestyle.
Optional Activities
In the afternoon, you have free time to choose optional activities such as:
- Quad biking on the sand dunes
- Sandboarding down the high dunes
- Visit to Khamlia village to hear Gnawa music
- Relaxing at the camp and enjoying the silence of the desert
Late Afternoon – Second Sunset in the Desert
For those who wish, another short camel ride can be arranged to watch a second sunset over the dunes. Alternatively, you can watch the sunset from near the camp.
Second Night in the Desert
You will spend a second night in the Berber camp. Enjoy another delicious dinner and another evening of Berber music under the stars.
Early Morning – Final Sunrise and Return
After enjoying a final sunrise over the desert and breakfast at the camp, you will ride your camel back to Merzouga village (or take a 4x4 transfer if you prefer).
Morning – Departure to Marrakech
After leaving the desert behind, you will begin the journey back to Marrakech, passing again through the natural wonders of the Atlas mountains.
Midday – Stop at Ouarzazate
On your way back, you will stop at Ouarzazate, known as the Hollywood of Africa or the Door of the Desert. You will have time to visit the Ksar of Ouarzazate, another impressive fortified village. This is a perfect place to take photos and explore its history.
You may also choose to visit the Taourirt Kasbah or the Atlas Film Studios (time permitting).
Afternoon – Crossing the High Atlas
After Ouarzazate, you will continue through the High Atlas mountains, crossing the Tizi n'Tichka pass once again. The afternoon light offers different perspectives of the mountain landscape.
We make several stops for photographs and rest breaks.
