Morning Arrival in Merzouga
Your exciting adventure begins with a warm welcome in Merzouga. You will arrive in the village in the morning. Your guide will meet you at the designated meeting point or at your accommodation if you are already staying in Merzouga.
After a brief orientation, you will prepare for your desert journey. You will have the opportunity to leave your main luggage in secure storage. Only a small overnight bag will go with you on the camel.
Late Morning – Departure into the Dunes
You will mount your camel and begin your full day journey into the majestic dunes of the Sahara. Each person receives their own camel. Your experienced camel guide will lead the way.
As you ride deeper into the Erg Chebbi dunes, the landscape becomes more dramatic. The village disappears behind the first line of dunes. The sand becomes softer and the dunes grow taller. You will feel the gentle sway of the camel as you cross the golden sands.
The scenery is simply stunning. You will have the opportunity to explore high dunes and remote areas that the shorter sunset rides do not reach. The silence is profound, broken only by the soft footsteps of the camels and the whisper of the wind.
Lunch in the Desert
Your guide will choose a sheltered spot among the dunes for a picnic lunch. You will rest in the shade of a dune while your guide prepares a simple but delicious meal. Fresh bread, salads, fruit, and mint tea are typically served.
After lunch, you will have time to relax, take photographs, or climb a nearby dune for panoramic views. This is your desert. Take it all in.
Afternoon – Continuing the Journey
After lunch, you will continue your camel trek through the dunes. Your guide will take you to the most beautiful and remote areas of Erg Chebbi. The afternoon light is perfect for photography, casting long shadows across the golden sand.
You will pass through valleys between dunes, cross flat salt flats, and climb gentle slopes. The camels know the terrain well and move at a calm, steady pace.
Late Afternoon – Arrival at the Camp and Sunset
You will arrive at the Berber camp in the late afternoon. After settling into your tent, your guide will lead you to a high dune near the camp to watch the sunset.
One of the most memorable moments of your journey will be the sunset in the desert. Enjoy the tranquility of the desert as the sun paints the sky with warm and golden colors. The view from the high dune is unbeatable. You can see dunes stretching in every direction, their colors shifting with the fading light.
Evening – Night in the Desert
After sunset, you will return to the camp. You will be welcomed with traditional Moroccan mint tea and a warm greeting from the camp staff.
You will spend the night in a traditional Berber camp in the heart of the desert. The camp consists of comfortable nomadic tents with real beds, mattresses, blankets, and pillows. Shared bathroom facilities are available.
You will enjoy a delicious traditional dinner prepared by your hosts. Typical dishes include:
- Moroccan soup (harira) to start
- Chicken or vegetable tagine cooked slowly with spices
- Couscous with vegetables
- Fresh Moroccan bread baked in the sand
- Seasonal fruit or sweet pastries for dessert
After dinner, the magic continues. Your hosts will play live Berber folk music around the campfire. The rhythmic drumming and traditional songs create a magical atmosphere. You may be invited to join in the dancing or simply sit back and listen.
Above you, the night sky reveals thousands of stars. By night, the stars in the desert sky are a sight you will never forget. With no light pollution, the Milky Way appears as a brilliant band across the sky. Shooting stars are common.
